Research Description
Bond's work bridges the gap between the single-cell and network models of visual cortex by exploring cell behavior in the context of activity across groups of cells. Modified reverse correlation and dual stimulation paradigms are used to create a high-resolution map of the influences of peripheral stimulation on Classic Receptive Field response characteristics. The links between oscillation, bursting and cell coupling is being studied by simultaneously recording activity across groups of 2-6 cells and assessing the relationship between oscillation and bursting, as well as how these mechanisms support synaptic communication. In addition to the information in a spike train, visual stimuli might be represented by dynamic sub-groupings of cells. Simultaneous activity in groups of cells is observed to see how correlation in their responses changes as a function of different spatial configurations of the stimulus. This work is fundamental to understanding the distributed representation of sensory information in the brain.
