Research Description
Michael I. Miga, Ph.D. received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Rhode Island in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics in 1992, 1994, respectively. He received his Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in Biomedical Engineering in 1998. He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University in the Spring of 2001 and is the Harvie Branscomb Professor at Vanderbilt. He is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Radiology and Radiological Sciences, and Neurological Surgery. He is director of the Biomedical Modeling Laboratory, and co-founder of the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE). He is current PI on several NIH grants concerned with image-guided brain, liver, and breast surgery. He is also PI and Director of a novel NIH T32 training program entitled, ‘Training Program for Innovative Engineering Research in Surgery and Intervention’ that is focused on the creation of translational technologies for treatment and discovery in human systems. In 2014, Dr. Miga was inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows which represents the top 2% of medical and biological engineers. He served as a charter member of the Biomedical Imaging Technology (BMIT-B) Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review at NIH from 2010-2014, and recently joined the Bioengineering, Technology, and Surgical Sciences (BTSS) Study Section as a charter member in July of 2017. His research interests are in image-guided surgery and intervention, computational modeling for therapeutic applications, and inverse problems in therapeutics and imaging.

Current projects include:
1. Computational biomechanical modeling for improving image-guided liver, brain, kidney, and breast surgery.
2. Tumor growth model-derived biophysical feature parameterization for driving interventions and predicting chemotherapeutic outcomes
3. Computational modeling of microwave ablation for therapeutic planning

Description: A post-doctoral position on an exciting NIH-funded project focused on a computational model-enhanced approach for tumor localization during breast lumpectomy is underway. This project involves the combination of biomechanical computational models of soft tissue deformation with intraoperative guidance and imaging technologies to create interactive displays to help navigate and localize breast tumors for lumpectomy. Our hypothesis in this work is that tumor localization is a major confounding factor for improving MR-driven resections as well other complementary disease detection methods (e.g. radioguided probes, optical imaging technologies, etc.). The opportunity to translate research from the computer work-bench to the clinic is a primary goal within this work. The trainee must have excellent organizational skills. Opportunities to pursue grants and movement towards promotions to research assistant professor possible.

Qualifications: The position is for a post-doctoral research associate who has received a doctoral degree in biomedical-related area with expertise in image registration & processing, computer vision, computer modeling, numerical analysis, soft-tissue mechanics, and/or three-dimensional digitization instrumentation.
