Research Description
The goal of my work is to identify the determinants of bone fragility and understand how aging and disease affect these determinants. Ultimately, we want to lower the number of bone fractures associated with osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer, and aging. There are promising anabolic treatments for osteoporosis, but little is known about the biological mechanisms that regulate the organization of bone tissue. The propensity to fracture does not just depend on bone mass, size, or density but also on the distribution of the bone tissue (structure) and the inherent quality of the bone matrix (bone quality). Therefore, we combine biomechanical and biological techniques to investigate the regulatory mechanisms involved in bone quality and to better understand how to treat diseases of the bone.

Available Postdoctoral Position Details

A postdoctoral position is available in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Lab at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The postdoctoral researcher will work on projects to identify matrix-related factors that explain the diabetes- and age-related increase in fracture risk. Studies will involve analysis of cadaveric tissue as well as measurements from subjects. Applicants being sought have a PhD in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or material science, but those with dissertation research related to matrix biology or biochemistry will also be considered. Preference will be given to those with experience in hard tissue mechanics and/or bone imaging/spectroscopy (high-resolution qCT, UTE-MRI, and Raman spectroscopy).

The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Dr. Jeffry Nyman as well as research staff and students of the Vanderbilt Center for Bone Biology. Expectations include working independently and efficiently, communicating clearly across multiple disciplines (engineering, imaging, and biology), preparing manuscripts, interacting with surgeons, and developing test protocols.
