Research Description
The functional neural circuit of the adult brain, including that of the cerebellar system, is comprised of a defined number of inhibitory and excitatory neurons. Developmental studies indicate that these functionally distinct neurons are generated during early development from spatially separate mitotic progenitors that transiently expand in response to extrinsic signals. Imbalance of excitation and inhibition as a result of alterations in these early developmental events has been implicated in several debilitating neurodevelopmental disorders, including ataxia and autism spectrum disorder, where cerebellar dysfunctions have been widely noted. Our laboratory is interested in how defined numbers of functionally and neurochemically different neurons are established and later incorporated into a functional cerebellar circuit, and how defined perturbations of this circuitry affects the ability of animals to integrate and process sensory information.

The cerebellar neurons are generated from their dividing precursors, and dysregulated proliferation of these precursors is associated with medulloblastoma, the most common pediatric malignant brain tumors. We are interested in identifying potential therapeutic target proteins of medulloblastoma.

Highly motivated candidates are sought for postdoctoral fellowship positions in the lab of Dr. Chin Chiang (https://medschool.vanderbilt.edu/chiang-lab/) at Vanderbilt University to study the mechanisms of neurogenesis and tumorigenesis in the brain. The successful candidates are expected to carry out his or her projects independently. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in biological sciences or related fields. Experience and background in cell/molecular biology techniques and mouse models are desired. In addition, the applicants should have good communication and written skills.

Qualified applicants should submit a cover letter describing previous research experience and current interests, curriculum vitae and contact details of three references to Dr. Chin Chiang by email at chin.chiang@vanderbilt.edu.
