Research Description
The overarching goal of the Aronoff lab is to improve human health through discovery, with a primary interest on maternal-child wellness. The Aronoff lab studies reproductive immunology with a focus on bacterial infections that complicate pregnancy. These infections include perinatal streptococcal infections and postpartum clostridial infections. Our major interest is revealing root molecular mechanisms whereby bacterial pathogens evade innate immunity within the female reproductive tract. We also study the impact of metabolic stressors such as obesity and diabetes on reproductive immunology and placental function. Our work with toxigenic clostridia has extended to non-reproductive tract infections, such as colitis caused by Clostridium diffficile. Members of our lab engage in a range of research approaches, from purely bench science to translational science to purely clinical research. We value interdisciplinary team science.

Clostridium difficile Host-Microbe Interactions & Translational Research Fellowship

Where: The Aronoff Lab, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, USA

Start date: immediately

The Aronoff Lab in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Infectious Diseases to join a team studying clinical and translational aspects of Clostridium difficile infection. Our lab focuses on host-microbial interactions in the context of serious Gram positive bacterial infections.

Training opportunities will be related to: animal models of C. difficile infection, clinical pharmacology, mucosal immunology and microbiology as well as building experience in the conduct of large human clinical trial.

Job requirements will include working with human research subjects, assisting with some mouse handling and infection and conducting bench-top assays related to bacterial pathogenesis and immune responses.

The appropriate candidate will have a PhD or MD (or both) and experience in bacterial pathogenesis and/or intestinal mucosal immunology. Preference will be given to individuals with experience in clostridial microbiology or host-microbe interactions. Strong organizational skills are a must. Candidates must be self-motivated, able to write scientific manuscripts and proposals well and have a track record of strong productivity. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to be able to function well in team science and in mentoring graduate students.

The Vanderbilt University Medical Center is an equal opportunities employer.

Interested applicants are requested to mail their CV, a one-page personal statement, and two letters of recommendation with reference phone numbers and email addresses to: David M. Aronoff, MD, d.aronoff@vanderbilt.edu
