Research Description
My research interests are in psychosocial factors that affect access, retention, and adherence to care for various populations, including people with HIV, Tuberculosis, or opioid use disorder. With domestic and international collaborators, I have worked to further validate and expand the use of HIV and TB-related stigma scales and to evaluate the impact of stigma on TB and HIV care outcomes. My substance use research interests began more recently as a scholar in the HIV/AIDS, Substance Abuse, and Trauma Training Program through the University of California, Los Angeles and a subsequent NIH/NIDA funded R03 study on prescription opioid misuse in people living with HIV. Through these projects I have been assessing the relationships between marijuana use, prescribed opioid use, and illicit opioid use in people living with HIV. Building on this work and in collaboration with investigators at Meharry Medical College, we are assessing low versus high resource medication-assisted treatment for persons with opioid use disorder presenting to the emergency department. Through this and other proposals under development, we aim to help address the opioid epidemic impacting Tennessee.
