Research Description
Dr. Patel's research focuses on brain dysfunction and critical illness, as related to traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), long-term cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aspects of ICU survivorship. He is an active member of the Critical Illness, Brain dysfunction, and Survivorship (CIBS) Center (, is an Executive Committee member, and serves as its Fiscal Officer. Also, he serves the Board of Directors for the Center for Emergency Care Research and Innovation (CERI). Dr. Patel helps Directs the extramural research portfolio for the Division of Trauma, Burn, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care across the Burn, Surgical, & Trauma ICUs.

Since 2010, the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), Eastern Association Surgery of Trauma (EAST) Foundation Research Scholarship, Vanderbilt CTSA, Vanderbilt Faculty Scholars Program, National Institutes of Health (NIH), & the Department of Defense (DoD) have supported his research efforts. Since 2016, he has served the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR), its Emergency Care Special Emphasis Panels, and the Surgery, Anesthesia, & Trauma (SAT) Study Section, and as of 2020, Dr. Patel represents Vanderbilt as its 1st Acute Care Surgeon permanent member.

Dr. Patel has attracted a >$20M NIH Principal Investigator portfolio on behalf of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) collaborative community, represented by 3 active independent research programs. The INSIGHT-ICU NIH/NIGMS (R01 GM120484) project will help define the impact of Delirium and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) on long-term Cognition, Return to Work, and Neuroinflammation after critical illness and injury. The BRAIN-ICU-2 NIH/NIA (R01 AG058639) platform will help define the relationship between delirium and dementia among ICU survivors, even those affected by COVID-19 (R01AG058639-02S1). The RETURN-III ORD/RRD VA Merit (I01 RX002992) will determine the effectiveness of computerized cognitive rehabilitation in ICU survivors.

Dr. Patel has published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Intensive Care Medicine, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM), JAMA Surgery, & Annals of Surgery, reflecting over 100 peer-reviewed articles, invited reviews, book chapters, and editorials. He has presented locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. He has mentored >60 undergraduate, pre-doctoral (MD and PhD candidates), post-doctoral trainees (F and K level resident and junior faculty), and motivated faculty (R level).
