Research Description
Dr. Patel's research focuses on brain dysfunction and critical illness, as related to traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), long-term cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aspects of ICU survivorship. He is an active member of the Critical Illness, Brain dysfunction, and Survivorship (CIBS) Center (www.icudelirium.org) and is an Executive Committee member. Also, he serves the Board of Directors for the Center for Emergency Care Research and Innovation (CERI). Dr. Patel helps Directs the extramural research portfolio for the Division of Acute Care Surgery (Trauma, Burn, Emergency General Surgery, & Surgical Critical Care) across the Burn, Surgical, and Trauma ICUs.

Since 2010, Dr. Patel has carried federal funding and has matured this to >$20M NIH Principal Investigator portfolio on behalf of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) collaborative community, represented by 3 active independent research programs. The INSIGHT-ICU NIH/NIGMS (R01 GM120484) project will help define the impact of Delirium and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) on long-term cognition, return to work, and neuroinflammation after critical illness and injury. The BRAIN-ICU-2 NIH/NIA (R01 AG058639) platform will help define the relationship between delirium and dementia among ICU survivors, even those affected by COVID-19 (R01AG058639-02S1). The RETURN-III ORD/RRD VA Merit (I01 RX002992) will determine the effectiveness of computerized cognitive rehabilitation in ICU survivors. In addition, as site-investigator for Vanderbilt, he coordinates a number of national & global studies (e.g., Department of Defense [DoD], Industry), participates in the NIH Center for Scientific Review, and is a permanent charter member for the Surgery, Anesthesia, & Trauma (SAT) Study Section.

Dr. Patel has publication record reflects over 130 peer-reviewed articles, invited reviews, book chapters, and editorials. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Sabiston Textbook of Surgery, Advanced Trauma Operative Management textbook, and the Journal of Surgical Research. He has presented locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. He has mentored >60 undergraduate, pre-doctoral (MD and PhD candidates), post-doctoral trainees (F and K level resident and junior faculty), and motivated faculty (R level). Dr. Patel leads as the Program Director for Vanderbilt's inaugural NIH/NIGMS (T32 GM135094) two-year Post-doctoral Research Fellowship: Interdisciplinary Training in Injury and Critical Illness.

Clinical Description
In the Department of Surgery, he clinically serves as the Division Chief of Acute Care Surgery that encompasses the domains of trauma, burns, emergency general surgery, and critical care delivering care across an 80,000 square mile area for middle Tennessee. As Department Vice-Chair of Professional Development, he is helping build a supportive program for Junior Faculty centering on mentorship, sponsorship, & promotion.

Previously, Dr. Patel helped deliver regional surgical care through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center & Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS). He served as TVHS Division/Section Chief of General Surgery (2019-2023), and TVHS Deputy Chief of Surgical Services (2020-2023), and led 12 surgical subspecialty services (Cardiac, ENT, General Surgery, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Renal Transplant, Thoracic, Urology, Vascular).

He is participatory in speciality societies (American College of Surgeons [ACS], ACS Committee on Trauma [COT], Center for National Trauma Research [CNTR], Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma [EAST], American Association for the Surgery of Trauma [AAST], Association for VA Surgeons [AVAS], Society of Critical Care Medicine [SCCM]), as well as academic surgical groups (American Surgical Association [ASA], Association for Academic Surgeons [AAS], Society of Asian Academic Surgeons [SAAS], Society for University Surgeons [SUS], Society of Clinical Surgery [SCS], Southern Surgical Association [SSA], Surgical Biology Club II [SBC II]), and other national entities (National Academies of Science, Engineering, & Medicine [NASEM]).
