Clinical Description
Richard G. Abramson, M.D., graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. He obtained his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Before completing his postgraduate training, Dr. Abramson served in various health policy and management roles, including as a Medicare policy analyst at the White House Budget Office and as an associate with The Lewin Group, McKinsey & Co., and Avalere Health. Dr. Abramson then returned to academic medicine, completing an internship in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, and a fellowship in cross-sectional imaging at Johns Hopkins. After a brief stint with Nighthawk Radiology Services, during which time he performed remote emergency and trauma radiology coverage for groups around the U.S., Dr. Abramson joined the radiology faculty at Vanderbilt Medical Center as a member of the Body Imaging section and as core faculty at the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science (VUIIS).

Dr. Abramson was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015 and was recently named Vice-Chair for Innovation. In this latter role, Dr. Abramson is charged with promoting entrepreneurship and commercialization efforts within the Department and for facilitating strategic relationships with other departments and outside stakeholders. He directs RadX, a novel healthcare startup incubator that launched in 2017 within the Department.

Dr. Abramson’s research interests span both translational cancer imaging and health care policy and management. As an oncologist radiologist and cancer imaging researcher, he works closely with basic science imaging collaborators at the VUIIS to develop and validate advanced imaging techniques for tumor detection, characterization, and treatment response assessment. He is currently Principal Investigator on a multi-site NIH U01 grant investigating multiparametric MRI for the early prediction of breast cancer response to neoadjuvant therapy. He serves as medical director of the Radiology Clinical Trials Support Core and the Vanderbilt Cancer Imaging Support Laboratory, which provides tumor measurement support for clinical trials at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. He has served as an independent reader and adjudicator for several multisite cancer clinical trials.

Dr. Abramson is a former Association of University Radiologists (AUR) GERRAF scholar and is an alumnus of the AUR Radiology Management Program. He sits on several hospital and professional society committees and was previously awarded Teacher of the Year from the Vanderbilt radiology residency program.
