Research Description
All animals must heal wounds to survive. My laboratory analyzes tissue repair in vivo, focusing on two aspects. First, we study the fundamental cell biology of repairing an epithelium using laser ablation and live imaging, asking how cells know there is a wound nearby, where it is, and how signals from the wound alter cell behaviors to promote wound closure. Second, we study the dynamics and repair of the basement membrane, the oldest and most conserved type of extracellular matrix.
Drosophila melanogaster (the common fruitfly) has been an important model organism for understanding cell and developmental biology because of its advanced genetics and remarkable conservation with humans. We utilize these features to address fundamental questions about how cells interact with their extracellular environment.
