Research Description
My research focuses on the genetics of cardiometabolic diseases, with a particular focus on functional genomics and clinical translation. I am interested in the interactions between genetic and environmental factors in disease development, and in the use of evoked phenotypes as a tool for genomic discovery. My current research projects include: 1) Understanding the determinants of alpha-aminoadipic acid and its relationship to diabetes ; 2) Novel metabolomic biomarkers of disease; 3) The interaction between diet and the microbiome in cardiometabolic risk; 4) Understanding the genomic determinants of febrile illness.

We have an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher within the Ferguson Lab, in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Our lab uses functional and translational genomic approaches to understand genetic and environmental determinants of cardiometabolic disease risk.

This project will focus on understanding the causes and consequences of variation in gut microbial composition using clinical, genetic and basic science approaches. The ideal candidate will have a background in molecular biology, genetics or microbiology, have strong skills in complex data analysis, and a lot of excitement for studying the microbiome!

Requirements

• PhD in microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, biomedicine, nutrigenomics, or related field.

• Skills in basic molecular biology techniques including cell culture, DNA/RNA/protein extraction, PCR.

• Skills in analysis of large complex datasets such as GWAS, or sequencing data. • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and able to actively lead complex translational projects, while working as part of a team.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

We have an opening for a postdoctoral candidate to investigate determinants of alpha-aminoadipic acid and relationship to diabetes. This position is within the Ferguson Lab, in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This project is focused on understanding how a novel metabolite, 2-AAA, is related to risk of diabetes, and requires translational integration of human clinical and genomic data, in addition to functional assays. The ideal candidate has a strong background in human genetics and molecular biology, with previous experience in in elucidating molecular mechanisms of human genetic variants using functional assays.
