Research Description
The Kirabo Laboratory is uncovering a new dimension of salt-sensitive hypertension by revealing how the immune system works alongside the kidney to regulate blood pressure and cardiovascular health. Our research has uncovered a previously unrecognized role for the immune system as a rapid sensor of dietary sodium, revealing that immune cells can detect excess salt and trigger inflammation that damages blood vessels, elevates blood pressure, and contributes to heart and kidney disease. This discovery opens an entirely new direction for preventing and treating one of the world’s leading causes of cardiovascular death. Our multidisciplinary program integrates human clinical studies, population genetics, single-cell multiomics, advanced computational approaches, and innovative humanized models to uncover why some individuals develop salt-sensitive hypertension while others do not. We recently identified genetic variants in a human-specific sodium channel that influence blood pressure, providing the first direct genetic evidence that immune sodium sensing contributes to hypertension. These findings are paving the way for precision medicine approaches that target the immune system rather than the kidney, with the goal of developing safer, kidney-sparing therapies. Beyond hypertension, our laboratory is expanding these discoveries to investigate how excess dietary sodium contributes to cardiovascular disease in autoimmune disorders and immune-metabolic reprograming, how the lymphatic system regulates immune responses to salt, and how the gut microbiome influences salt sensitivity. Our overarching mission is to transform the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease by uncovering fundamental immune mechanisms that connect diet, inflammation, genetics, and vascular health.
