Research Description
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and its prevalence increases in the aged population. The development of pharmacologic approaches to prevent and/or treat AMD faces significant obstacles including the lack of understanding of the key molecular mechanisms that is compromised with aging and is responsible for the initiation and progression of this disease. We are interested to explore the biology of aging that contributes to RPE dysfunction and impairs retinal health and homeostasis. Our studies use novel and innovative approaches to understand the cellular, molecular, and genetic contributions through which increased apoptosis, dysfunctional autophagy, and activation of pro-inflammatory signaling in the RPE lead to the pathophysiology of AMD.
