Research Description
Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), the enigmatic pathology whereby epileptic patients are found to have died without another cause, is the most frequent cause of death in epilepsy patients. The rare cases of SUDEP in healthcare settings show a sequence where apnea precedes terminal cardiac arrhythmias, implicating death due to respiratory decline. From our work and the work of others, it is clear that the amygdala has an underappreciated role in breathing. Our research aim is to investigate these brain regions through multidisciplinary approach to determine their role in epilepsy, apneas, and SUDEP.
