Research Description
My primary research interest is studying the oncologic, functional and patient-reported outcomes of patients with bone and soft tissue sarcoma through multicenter collaboration. In addition, we are prospectively seeking to improve the clinical outcome and patient experience of patients with soft tissue sarcoma by studying the following:
1. The efficacy of an enhanced recovery after surgery perioperative pain management pathway
2. The efficacy of 5-day hypofractionated neoadjuvant radiation instead of typical longer courses
Lastly, we are currently investigating the use of deep learning to better understand advanced imaging while making the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors, and 3D specimen scanning to improve our understanding of surgical margins.

Clinical Description
Joshua M. Lawrenz, MD, MSc joined the Vanderbilt University Medical Center as an orthopaedic oncology surgeon in 2020. He graduated from Wheaton College in 2010, and the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 2014. He completed orthopaedic surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic in 2019, and his fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2020. His clinical practice includes limb salvage surgery in children and adults for pelvic and extremity bone and soft tissue sarcomas. He also treats patients with benign bone and soft tissue tumors, as well as metastatic bone disease. In addition, he has an elective primary and revision total joint replacement practice. He serves as Chief of the Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology, and is the Director of the Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship Program.
